Not all carpets are the same, so even if you have an idea of the style of carpet that might suit your space, its important to consider the quality of materials, the manufacturing process, carpet care and more. Our experts make it easy to find quality, attractive carpets that won’t break your budget. Here’s a guide to help you get started:
Carpet Styles & Construction :
Cut pile carpets have fabric loops attached to the backing material that are cut, giving the carpet a plush look. Traditional carpet, frieze, shag carpets and similar styles are all cut pile.
With this type of carpet, the loops of yarn on the backing are not cut, creating loops. Berber carpets are the most popular style of this type of carpet.
When loops on the backing material are not cut but are of different heights, you get a patterned loop carpet. The different heights are often used to create patterns.
Cut and Loop
Some carpets have both loops and cut loops, which can be fashioned to create geometric patterns for visual interest.
With this cut pile carpet, the loops are cut low and even, creating a smooth look. Since it is made from tightly woven carpet fibers, it is thick, luxurious and warm. This is a type of carpet where your feet can sink into softness. It is long-lasting and can last 10 years or more with proper care. It also does not go out of style, since the even height and color make this carpet so classic. Saxony is also very customizable to your needs. It’s available in denser styles for higher-traffic areas and plusher styles for bedrooms where softness is most important. You can also buy Saxony carpets made from a range of materials, including wool, nylon, polyester and other materials, so you can get the look and feel you want.
With plenty of texture, this carpet adds visual interest to any room with its twisted yarn, shaggy look. It does not show dirt easily, and this carpet can come in any color, including multiple shades in one carpet. Whether you have pets, a big family, lots of high-traffic areas or other factors that necessitate durable flooring, you can still enjoy the softness and warmth of a carpet in your home with little maintenance.
This low profile carpet stands up well to higher traffic and is popular for its flecks of color and thick yarn loops. Berber carpet offers a relaxed, casual look, as well as exceptional comfort. For high-traffic areas, Berber carpeting is also great because it is easy to clean. Since it is a looped carpet, spills tend not to sink into the carpet quickly, which gives you a chance to clean up. This is one reason why even paler-color Berber carpets are a popular choice. Unlike softer cut pile carpets, Berbers do not show vacuum marks and tend to look great after just a quick sweep.
The most traditional carpet type, this carpet features a level, smooth surface that makes it easy to vacuum. With a variety of colors and styles, texture carpet, as this style is sometimes known, works in most rooms. Plush carpets are made from an array of different material and can come in different yarn twists, densities and heights. These factors can affect pricing, quality and the feel of the carpet. Your foot sinks right in, and the softness of the fibers make this surface very inviting to walk, sit or relax on. A plush carpet also has a luxurious, even appearance with fray-less edges that can work well in formal or casual rooms. Some plush carpeting is particularly simple to clean and designed to last for years.
This carpet creates designs by using looped and cut carpet fibers. If you want a sophisticated look without a “busy” feel, pattern carpets are a choice to consider. With virtually any design this carpet can add a sophisticated, designer feel to virtually any room. Whether you have a traditional, classical or modern look, patterned carpets can work. Since this carpet has different levels, it can hide dirt and footprints effectively, making the pattern carpet look better between vacuuming. This is one reason this flooring is a popular choice for families.
In a commercial space, there’s no question that the floors need to be durable, given that they’re facilitating more traffic as well as more rugged conditions than the average home. Commercial floors are designed for the unique scenarios that commercial spaces face. Business owners choosing new flooring for their retail, commercial or industrial spaces need to make a smart investment — one that will continue to serve them for years to come.
Whether you’re interested in installing artificial grass for your lawn, needlepunch carpet for your deck or boat carpet for your vessel, outdoor carpeting provides the durability and comfort to satisfy your needs.

Carpet Pile & Face Weight
When determining the quality and durability of carpet, start by finding out its pile height and face weight.
Low pile carpet has short fibers that look and feel flat and dense. This type of carpet is easy to clean and durable; it doesn’t catch much dirt or debris, and it can stand up to a lot of foot traffic without losing its initial appearance. Low pile carpet is the best carpet for high traffic areas and rooms where dirt, pet hair or other messes are a concern.
Medium pile carpet offers a balance of ease and comfort. With fibers taller than those of low pile carpet, medium pile carpet is softer to the touch but still manages to hold up to moderate foot traffic and dirt, making it a popular choice for living rooms and bedrooms where you may want more comfort underfoot. Although more prone to catching pet hair and debris, this type of carpet can still be easily cleaned with a vacuum with a brush roller.
High pile carpet has long fibers that create a plush and fluffy look and feel. High pile carpets add extra cushion underfoot but also more readily collect dust and debris, making it require more frequent maintenance. Additionally, high pile carpets are more prone to being crushed and holding impressions from furniture and foot traffic. This pile height is a good choice for areas where you want to add a touch of warmth and luxury or where you want to dampen noise.
Face weight is a measure of how much yarn makes up the carpet pile. A higher face weight means more yarn and thus a denser, longer-lasting carpet. Face weight also tends to correlate with price, so carpet with a high face weight is usually more expensive than carpet with a low face weight. You can think of carpet face weight in the same terms as thread count for bedding—the higher, the better.
Most carpet fibers are made of synthetic materials or blends of synthetic and natural materials, since synthetic materials are designed to resist stains, static electricity, fading and moisture. Of course, each type of carpet fiber has various pros and cons, even among synthetic options. There are five primary types of carpet fibers:
Polyester fibers, like triexta fibers, are hydrophobic and resist stains. Polyester also offers vibrant color options. However, polyester fibers can fade in the sun and are generally known to be less durable than nylon fibers.
Wool, a traditional and natural fiber, has a soft and luxurious feel. Wool is a strong material that can hold up to heavy foot-traffic and compaction from furniture, but it needs to be cleaned and maintained properly. Many stains as well as the chemicals in stain removers can damage wool carpet.
Olefin is another durable and colorfast fiber option that is suitable for high traffic areas. Olefin carpet tends to be less expensive than the previous four fibers.
